Greetings to the residents of Crystal Springs and Copiah County! There is much to report for Crystal Springs High School as we give thanks for a successful past year and look forward to an even better 2015-16. School ratings often times provide the public perception of a school’s success. An item of great pride for CSHS is our school rating. Crystal Springs High School improved to a “C” rating, which is considered to be a successful school, and we are excited to continue to do better every moment. As our signs in the hallway proclaim, we are CSHS, and we expect greatness!

We are truly the school of Crystal Springs, MS, and this was showcased early last year with sixty-four door prizes for our new teachers being donated by local businesses and individuals. Our teachers arrived last year, as they will this year, with a breakfast courtesy of McDonald’s and a lunch provided by the Crystal Springs Chamber of Commerce.

During the year, we gave back to our community through many areas, such as food drives for the S.O.S. and blood drives. Over 100 pints of blood were given by our students and local residents! We had our Veterans’ Day program in which we honored a group of local vets who proudly served in our armed forces.

Our students were involved with athletics and activities, and we had another very successful athletic year. We had multiple scholarships given in different sports, and who could forget our boys’ basketball season with a district championship and an appearance in the state tournament elite eight? Our football team is improving, and we had one of our students listed in the Clarion Ledger’s “20 to Watch” for this upcoming football season. During our spring jamboree, we had a sideline full of college coaches present to watch the Tigers, and we hope you do the same in the fall and come support our Tigers. Our band received superior ratings at the state concert evaluation, and the new concert choir performed at different community functions. They are fabulous!

We produced extracurricular activities for our students, such as our annual college fair, video game trailer for students without absences or discipline referrals, a football cookout for the same students, trips to be recognized by our state senate and house, and academic competitions. This past school year, our students have won scholarships at science competitions, placed in state reading fairs, placed first in a writing exam, placed top ten in math, and finished first in Fun with Math competitions. Perhaps the most impressive was a team effort, as our academic team finished second at last year’s JSU Math and Science Bowl. We finished second, and one answer stood between CSHS and first place in the state.

There were new opportunities for students, as we had three graduates receive honors through the Mississippi Scholars program. Many received up to twelve hours of college credit that they received as dual-credit via our partnership with Hinds Community College, and even more hours will be offered this upcoming year. Our students can take classes on our campus that count toward college credit. Our teachers also can join a cohort through William Carey to work on post-graduate degrees from here on campus. We continue our partnership with Mississippi Job Corps, and we are thankful to have such a tremendous local partner for our students.

The school year ended with graduation at the most beautiful schoolhouse in Mississippi and perfect weather. We were again embraced by New Zion UMC for our baccalaureate service and are thankful for the love and benevolence from our community.

This summer was extremely busy, as we painted walls and buffed floors. We hosted extended school year, driver’s education, band practices, and weights and practices for our athletes. It was not unusual to have over two hundred students around campus on any given day. All groups are working very hard for the upcoming year.

The majority of our staff is returning, and we are extremely excited to welcome a few new faces to our team. We are building a strong cohort of teachers who love our children. I would go so far as to say one would have to look extremely hard between Jackson and Hattiesburg to find a staff as highly trained and educated. CSHS is blessed with a very professional staff.

In closing, please come visit us. If you have not been to campus lately, call me at 601-892-4791 or email me at bill.broadhead@copiah.ms and allow me to show you our campus and our students. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter. On the average week, our Facebook wall has between 2,000 and 4,000 unique visitors. We love bragging on our staff and students and regularly update with videos and photos from campus.

EXPECT GREATNESS!
